Authorities said a gunman shot through a window and then broke into the Colorado Supreme Court building before dawn Tuesday before he ultimately surrendered to police.

Colorado State Patrol said the gunman, who hasn’t been publicly identified, caused “significant and extensive damage” during his intrusion.

However, police don’t believe his actions were connected to any recent threats made against the state’s Supreme Court justices.

The FBI said it was investigating threats after the court ruled last month to remove Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump from the state’s primary ballot because of his actions related to the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021.

Colorado authorities said the gunman was involved in a car crash around 1:15 a.m. on the Denver street corner where the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center is located.

Police said the man aimed his gun at the other driver involved in the crash before he shot his way into the judicial building that houses the Colorado Supreme Court, the Colorado Court of Appeals and other state agencies.  

The man then took an unarmed security guard’s keys at gunpoint and accessed “an unknown number of floors” in the building, according to police.

Authorities said he eventually made his way up to the seventh floor of the building, where he fired off more shots.

“At approximately 3 a.m., the suspect called 911 and voluntarily surrendered to police,” Colorado State Patrol said in a release. “He was placed in custody without further incident. There are no injuries to building occupants, the suspect, or police personnel.”

The man was taken to a local hospital for a medical examination.
