Greensboro officer killed, officials looking for 2 suspects

An officer with the Greensboro Police Department was killed following a shooting, according to police.

THANK YOU FOR COMING. UH, FIRST, LIKE TO THANK, UH, MAYOR VAUGHN FOR JOINING US TONIGHT. UH, AS A REPRESENTATIVE HERE FOR THE GREENSBORO CITY COUNCIL THIS EVENING, THE GREENSBORO POLICE DEPARTMENT LOST ONE OF OUR OWN. AROUND 4 P.M. AT THE SHEETZ, LOCATED AT 30 202 SANDY RIDGE ROAD, AN OFF DUTY GREENE BOROUGH POLICE SERGEANT WITNESSED A CRIME OCCURRING. THE OFFICER APPROACHED THE SUSPECTS AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY SHOT. ANOTHER OFF DUTY, GREENSBORO POLICE OFFICER AND A GUILFORD COUNTY PARAMEDIC WERE ON SCENE AND IMMEDIATELY RENDERED AID. THE SERGEANT WAS TRANSPORTED TRANSPORT TO A LOCAL MEDICAL FACILITY, WHERE HE SUCCUMBED TO HIS INJURIES. HE WAS A LOVING HUSBAND, FATHER, SON, AND BROTHER. WITH 22 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE DEPARTMENT IN THIS COMMUNITY. WE ASKED FOR PRAYERS FOR THE FAMILY OF THE FALLEN OFFICER AND OUR IN GREENSBORO PD FAMILY. WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL OF THE ORGANIZATIONS AND LEADERS FOR OFFERING CONDOLENCES AND ASSISTANCE, INCLUDING GOVERNOR COOPER, GUILFORD COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY. HIS OFFICE, SECRET SERVICE, FBI, US MARSHALS, ATF, DEA, SBI, QPP, FORSYTH COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, GUILFORD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, WINSTON-SALEM POLICE DEPARTMENT, AND THE HIGH POINT POLICE DEPARTMENT. WE’D ALSO LIKE TO EXPRESS OUR APPRECIATION TO OUR COMMUNITY, COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE OFFERED THEIR CONDOLENCE AND SUPPORT. WE WILL NOT BE RELEASING THE OFFICER’S INFORMATION AT THIS TIME OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE FAMILY. An officer with the Greensboro Police Department was killed following a shooting, according to police.

An officer with the Greensboro Police Department was killed following a shooting, according to police.Greensboro police said an off-duty officer was killed after witnessing a crime occurring at the Sheetz on Sandy Ridge Road. They said the officer was shot around 4 p.m. after approaching the suspects. “Tonight, the Greensboro Police Department lost one of our own,” Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson said. A Blue Alert was issued in response to the incident, however, it was canceled around 7:52 p.m. “We ask for prayers for the family of the fallen officer and our Greensboro PD family,” Thompson said. He also thanked several agencies for assisting throughout the day in the search for the suspects. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper issued the following statement on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.”I spoke with Greensboro Police Chief Thompson earlier this evening offering all available state resources to catch those who killed a Greensboro police officer. Our prayers are with the Greensboro police and family and loved ones. Every effort must be made to apprehend those responsible and bring justice in this tragic situation.”Thompson said another off-duty officer and a Guilford County paramedic on scene tried to save the officer. However, the officer was transported to a hospital and later died. “He was a loving husband, father, son and brother with 22 years of service to the department and this community,” Thompson said. WXII 12 has reached out to police to see if there was an update on the suspects but have not heard back.Greensboro police also have not released the name of the officer who was killed at this time.
