THAT NEW VIDEO. NICK AND COLUMBUS POLICE WERE HERE IN THIS PARKING LOT ABOUT 1:00 THIS AFTERNOON WHEN THEY SAW SOMETHING GOING ON IN THE STREET THERE BEHIND ME. WHERE YOU SEE A DEMONSTRATION GOING ON RIGHT NOW, THOSE OFFICERS IN TOWN FOR THE RNC ENCOUNTERING A MAN WITH KNIVES AND OPENED FIRE. THE COLUMBUS POLICE CHIEF RELEASING BODY CAMERA VIDEO. JUST BEFORE EIGHT TONIGHT. WE WANT TO WARN YOU. SOME MAY FIND IT DISTURBING. THAT’S A LITTLE BIT OF MIX OF EVERYTHING, RIGHT? HE’S GOT A KNIFE. YES, HE DOES. HEY HEY HEY HEY, STOP! DROP THE KNIFE! KNIFE! DROP. DROP YOUR KNIFE! DROP THE KNIFE! BLADE! DROP YOUR KNIFE! DROP, DROP THE KNIFE, GIRL. DROP DOWN A FIRE ON FIRE ON FIRE. THE BODY CAMERA VIDEO SHOWS COLUMBUS, OHIO. OFFICERS OPENED FIRE 14 SECONDS AFTER THEY FIRST SHOUTED FOR A MAN TO DROP A KNIFE. IN THE VIDEO. YOU CAN SEE THE MAN’S ACTUALLY HOLDING TWO KNIVES, ONE IN EACH HAND LUNGING TOWARDS ANOTHER MAN IN THE STREET. ONE OFFICERS OPENED FIRE. THE THREAT WAS IN FRONT OF THEM. THEY ACT MILWAUKEE POLICE CHIEF JEFFREY NORMAN SAID THE OHIO OFFICERS WERE SIMPLY PREPPING FOR THEIR DAY ON BICYCLE PATROL IN THE RNC SECURITY ZONE WHEN THEY SAW THE MEN ARGUING, AND THEN THE KNIVES. TWO KNIVES, WERE RECOVERED FROM THIS PARTICULAR SITUATION SOMEONE’S LIFE WAS IN DANGER. THESE OFFICERS, WHO ARE NOT FROM THIS AREA TOOK UPON THEMSELVES TO ACT TO SAVE SOMEONE’S LIFE. TODAY, WITNESSES SAY THE MAN KILLED LIVED IN THE TENT CITY JUST A HALF BLOCK FROM WHERE THE SHOOTING TOOK PLACE. WE TURN BACK AROUND. THEY SHOT HIM AND I MEAN THEY TO ME, THAT WAS THAT WAS TO ME, THAT WAS MURDER. I JUST WITNESSED A MURDER BY THE POLICE. DO YOU KNOW? WAS HE THREATENING ANYONE WITH THE KNIFE AT THAT? THREATENED? YES. HE WAS THREATENING THE OTHER. THE OTHER GUY THAT BECAUSE. YEAH. BECAUSE THE OTHER GUY JUST MADE THREATS TO HIM. MILWAUKEE POLICE SAY THE COLUMBUS OFFICERS ARE GIVING STATEMENTS TO INVESTIGATORS. THE OFFICERS, IF THEY ARE THEY STILL IN TOWN? ARE THEY BEING QUESTIONED? ARE THEY COOPERATING? THEY’RE ACTUALLY WITH OUR MILWAUKEE AREA INVESTIGATIVE TEAM, AND THEY ACTUALLY ARE COOPERATING. NOW. THERE WAS A MASSIVE POLICE RESPONSE OUT HERE RIGHT AFTER THAT SHOOTING. WITH SO MANY OFFICERS IN TOWN FROM THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY TO ASSIST WITH THE RNC. Police officers from Columbus, Ohio, shot and killed a man at about 1:10 p.m. Tuesday near 14th and Vliet streets in Milwaukee, which is about 1 mile from Fiserv Forum, the main RNC venue. Witnesses told WISN 12 News two homeless men were fighting in King Park, and one of them pulled a knife out. The witnesses said the men were startled when so many officers responded. Witnesses say the man with the knife was fired on by numerous officers. Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman held a news conference Tuesday evening. (See below) He said 13 Columbus officers assigned to bike patrol saw a man with a knife in each hand engaged in a confrontation with an unarmed person. Norman said the officers identified themselves and told him to drop the knife. The man instead charged at the other individual with the knives. Officers then fired at the man.”Someone’s life was in immediate danger. Officers took it upon themselves to act and save someone’s life today,” Norman said. Norman confirmed five officers fired shots. Two knives were found at the scene, Norman said. There was a large police presence, including the Secret Service, at the scene. Protesters showed up at the scene and held a news conference. They said the man’s name was Samuel Sharpe Jr., but that has not been confirmed. Family said he is a homeless veteran.

A statement from the Columbus Fraternal Order of Police says no officers were injured.

“In the interest of transparency, I am releasing body-worn camera footage of the shooting. I have been in contact with the Milwaukee Police Department to advise them of my decision to release this footage,” Chief Elaine R. Bryant said.

Police from 63 departments in 24 states and Washington, D.C., along with 44 Wisconsin agencies are in Milwaukee this week for the Republican National Convention.

WISN 12 News Political Director Matt Smith talked to Mayor Cavalier Johnson at the RNC who said he was just being briefed on the situation.

The incident itself does not appear to be related to the RNC and was outside the security zone.

“The incident took place in the outer perimeter of the RNC, within the operational zone to which our officers were assigned,” the Columbus Police Department said in a statement.

The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is investigating the shooting. The Greenfield Police Department will be the lead law enforcement agency in the investigation.
