Authorities in Massachusetts said a former fire chief was shot and killed by police Friday after the man pulled a gun on officers outside of a bar near the southeastern town of Fairhaven.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn told a press conference that Paul Coderre, 55, who was once the interim fire chief for the New Bedford Fire Department, traded gunfire with police before he was mortally wounded.

Mr. Quinn said one officer was shot in the leg during the exchange. The officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital.

Police were called to the bar around 4:30 p.m. Friday over a report of a drunken patron trying to drive away.

Mr. Quinn said responding officers noticed Mr. Coderre was armed once they got to the scene. What followed was an hours-long negotiation between police and the former fire chief.

“They attempted to speak to him and de-escalate the situation,” the district attorney said. “Several attempts were made to use non-deadly force to subdue him, including the use of a Taser. Those attempts were not successful.”

Mr. Quinn said Mr. Coderre drew his gun and fired on the officers, prompting them to shoot back.

“This evening’s fatal shooting in Fairhaven was tragic in every sense,” New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell wrote on social media. “I am relieved that the officer who was injured will make a full recovery, and that no one else was seriously hurt.”

Boston’s NBC affiliate reported that Mr. Coderre had fired by the town two years ago, allegedly for lying about work-related injuries. The city said he was caught on video doing strenuous physical labor, at a time when he was collecting more than $200,000 in disability benefits.
