DETROIT — A defect in several Toyota models has led to a recall of one million vehicles as the issue may prevent air bags from deploying in the event of a crash.
According to the Associated Press, the recall impacts 2020-2022 Avalons, Camrys, Highlanders, RAV4s, Siennas and Corollas. Some of the hybrid versions of those models are also included in the recall. Lexus models are also involved in the recall, including the ES250 sedan and the RX350 SUV.
The issue stems from a problem with the sensors in the front passenger seat that may not have been manufactured properly. The sensors could short circuit and if that happens, they may not correctly recognize the weight of the person in the seat. In turn, the air bag may not deploy as intended in certain types of crashes.
Dealerships will inspect the OCS sensors and if necessary, will replace them at no cost to the owners. Affected owners will be notified via letter starting in February. Toyota owners of possibly impacted vehicles can contact the company at 1-800-331-4331 for more information, while Lexus may call 1-800-255-3987.
